What does an indoor security camera do that an outdoor one does not?
Indoor cameras cover the space an intruder reaches after entry rather than the approach to it. They work in controlled lighting with no weather exposure, which allows smaller housings and wider lenses. Their job is identification and confirmation of what happened inside, not detection at the perimeter.
That difference shapes the hardware. Without rain, temperature swings, or direct sun to design around, an indoor camera can be small enough to sit on a shelf and wide enough to hold a whole room in frame. It also sits far closer to what it records, so a subject fills more of the frame than the same person crossing a driveway — which is why indoor footage is frequently what identifies someone, even when the outdoor cameras saw them first.
Where should indoor security cameras be placed?
The most useful indoor positions face entry points from the inside — the hallway a front door opens into, the top of a stairway, the room a back door leads to. One camera covering a doorway everyone has to pass through is worth more than several pointed at open floor space.
The instinct is to cover valuables, but such a room is a large space with many angles and no guaranteed path through it. A choke point solves that problem: anyone moving between floors or from an entry into the rest of the house passes through it, facing roughly the same direction, at a predictable distance from the lens. Mounting height matters for the same reason — a camera high in a corner angled steeply down mostly records the tops of heads, while one closer to eye level catches faces. Do indoor security cameras record audio?
Most indoor cameras include a microphone and record audio alongside video, and many add a speaker for two-way talk. Audio is usually on by default and can be disabled per camera. Recording conversations carries legal considerations that video alone does not, so the setting is worth checking deliberately.
Audio is genuinely useful in a few narrow cases — hearing a door forced before anything enters the frame, or speaking through the camera to someone who should not be there. It is also the feature households most often turn off once they realize what a continuously recording microphone in a living space captures. Treating it per room rather than system-wide usually lands in the right place: on at the entry hallway, off where people actually live.
How do indoor cameras handle privacy inside the house?
Indoor cameras record the people who live there far more often than an intruder, so most offer privacy controls: a physical lens shutter, scheduled off periods, geofencing that stops recording when phones are home, and activity zones. Those features exist because the honest limitation of an indoor camera is constant household coverage.
Of those, the physical shutter is the only one visible from across the room, which is why it tends to be the one households trust. Software schedules and geofencing do the same job with less friction but require believing the setting is applied, and geofencing in particular fails in ordinary ways — a phone left behind, a guest arriving alone, a household member without the app. Deciding in advance which rooms will never have a camera is a cleaner boundary than relying on one that switches itself off.
What do indoor security cameras miss?
Indoor cameras only see what has already come inside, so they document a break-in rather than deter it. They also lose most of their value in unlit rooms with the blinds drawn, through windows where infrared reflects straight back, and in open-plan spaces where a wide lens spreads detail too thin to identify anyone.
None of that argues against indoor coverage — it argues for treating it as the second layer. Detection belongs at the doors and windows, and the indoor camera exists to answer what happened after something got past them.
